Starting off on Monday 13th January 2020 at Flamingo Park and Listen To Lilly lines up in the first race on the card, where she will be expected to go a lot closer this time. Then on Wednesday 15th January 2020, we have all of Purple Powahouse, Storm Ruler and Binary Star who will be expected to  show good improvement in their respective races out at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. Finally, Zig Zag is a reserve runner in the third race on Thursday 16th January 2020, at the Vaal. If he does start, he will be looking to put that disappointing latest effort behind him. See more about their chances here.

Monday 13th January 2020
Flamingo Park

Race 1 – 12:40
1000m – Maiden Plate (Fillies)

5 – Listen To Lilly
Trainer: Cliffie Miller
Jockey: Calvin Habib
Wgt: 60.0kg
Draw: 2 (10 Runners)
Current Betting: 16/1

After an improved last run when dropping back to the 1000m, she returns to the same course and distance from a similar draw and we expect her to show further improvement here. The form line of that latest run has been franked which will certainly strengthen her chances here and despite the fact that she is not the stable elect, she has a nice place chance in this field. She has plenty of speed and if things go to plan, she could be difficult to catch in the latter stages.

Winning Form Comment: Showed some improvement last time. Form of that race has been franked. Can earn.

Wednesday 15th January 2020
Hollywoodbets Scottsville

Race 1 – 12:45
1200m – www.trackandball.co.za Maiden Plate

8 – Purple Powahouse
Trainer: Alyson Wright
Jockey: Tristan Godden
Wgt: 60.0kg
Draw: 8 (18 Runners)
Predicted Betting: 16/1

Things went horribly wrong for this son of What A Winter on debut. He bolted down to the start, using up a lot of energy in the process and although some may argue that he should’ve been withdrawn at the start, he was surprisingly deemed fit to take part. From the off, he went handy and he predictably faded out in the closing stages. With that in mind, we have put a line through that run and gone back to the drawing board with him. He has come along nicely since and we expect big improvement on that modest debut. The key to this run is to iron out some bad habits and at a decent price, he is expected to go very close to finding the places.

Winning Form Comment: Had excuses when making debut on the poly track. Should improve.

Race 4 – 14:25
2400m – Track & Ball Gaming MR 82 Handicap

10 – Storm Ruler
Trainer: Alyson Wright
Jockey: Jason Gates (-1.5kg)
Draw: 10 (13 Runners)
Predicted Betting: 20/1

He improved last time out, when having his second start after a rest and he will be cherry ripe for this outing now. He steps up to a trip where he has a very useful record and having ridden him on a number of occasions prior to his rest, Jason Gates knows him well enough. From gate 10, he will be looking to settle close to the front of the pack and he should stay on nicely in the closing stages. With the expected improvement, he should have decent place chance, but he may need to drop further in the ratings before he finds the winners box again.

Winning Form Comment: 3rd run after rest. Fair effort last time. Should be cherry-ripe. Place chance.

Race 5 – 15:00
1200m – Greyville Convention Centre Novice Plate

9 – Binary Star
Trainer: Alyson Wright
Jockey: Tristan Godden
Wgt: 60.0kg
Draw: 9 (10 Runners)
Predicted Betting: 20/1

He didn’t get the best of breaks at the start last time out, when making his handicap debut and he now reverts back to the Hollywoodbets Scottsville straight course. Coupled with the previous comment is the fact that he may have needed the run far more than we expected, with it being his first run after his gelding back in October. Tristan Godden jumps back aboard this son of Querari and we expect him to make big improvement this time. He is far better that last run suggests and from a much handier position this time, he should finish a lot closer. This is a field peppered with some talented three year olds, so it is definitely worth throwing a bit of caution to the wind. But on his ability alone, he can find the first four places.

Winning Form Comment: Had excuses at the start last time. Should strip fitter and can improve.

Thursday 16th January 2020
Vaal Turf

Race 3 – 13:40
1200m – Interbet.co.za Maiden Plate

18 – Zig Zag
Trainer: Clinton Binda
Jockey: Reserve Runner
Wgt: 60.0kg
Draw: 10 (18 runners)
Predicted Betting: 80/1

He lines up as the second reserve runner and as such, we will have to wait for two withdrawals in order for him to take his place at the start. After a very disappointing last  start, we will be looking for big improvement if he does go ahead and run. But we’ll be waiting for him to improve before he is tipped to the public with any confidence.

Winning Form Comment: Well beaten in latest. Others look to have a better chance.
