MAITLAND MAGIC was purchased by the Hollywood Syndicate at the 2018 National Yearling Sale. This colt is sired by Silvano, out of the dam Mocha Java (National Assembly), and was bred by Maine Chance Farms. Pictured above as a yearling.

Name: MAITLAND MAGIC
Named By: Hollywoodbets Western Cape Admin Team
Sex: Chestnut Colt
Foaled: 05/10/2016
Sire: Silvano
Mare: Mocha Java (National Assembly)
Breeder:  Maine Chance Farms (Pty) Ltd
Trainer: Gavin Smith
Purchased: National Yearling Sale, April 2018
Pedigree: View here
Record: 18-3-3
Status: Retired

Maitland Magic is a Silvano colt out the black type winning mare, Mocha Java.

He is incidentally quite closely related to another Hollywood filly, Mocha Rose (Duncan Howells) who has just notched up her 2nd win from just 7 starts (2 places), taking her career earnings to just under R160 000 (as at 20th March 2019).

He is not the biggest colt, yet he is very well proportioned with a lot of substance to him.

Our initial impression is that he looked like a 1000m – 1400m horse, but his pedigree would indicate a 1600m – 2000m horse.

Another fine moving individual with a quality presence about him.

He comes from the same family that produced the likes of Hunting Tower and Mochachino.

He was broken in by Jane Thomas’ Far End Farms and is currently stabled with Gavin Smith.

December 24th, 2021
Raced over 1600m at Fairview on the polytrack. Anthony Delpech post-race comment: The distance was too far for him. Gavin Smith said he ran him over the 1600m as he didn’t want him to need the run when he runs over 1400m coming up.

June 2nd, 2021
He tried the 1700m for the first time this afternoon. He found himself too far back in transit and did not enjoy the kickback. He is better over shorter and when racing on the speed.

He was impressive when winning the 7th race at Hollywoodbets Greyville on the polytrack under a perfect ride by Richard Fourie. Well done to trainer Peter Muscutt and the breeders Maine Chance Farms.

October 26th, 2020
Maitland Magic doing his final bit of work this morning before he runs on Wednesday 28th October 2020. He is in a great space heading in to this race and the stable sees no reason why he can’t follow up and win here, despite this being his first run out of the maidens.

September 23rd, 2020
Maitland Magic gets the job done in fine style, when picking up his maiden win on his local debut at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse this afternoon, under a solid ride by Anton Marcus. A well bred son of the recently retired Silvano, out of the National Assembly mare Mocha Java, he looks destined for a few more visits to the winners enclosure. Well done to the Brett Crawford stable and breeders Maine Chance Farms.

September 4th, 2020
Maitland Magic seen below, working alongside his stable companion in preparation for his first outing in KZN. He’s not quite there yet, but the Brett Crawford stable are happy with his progression and he should give a very good account of himself when he does return to racing in the next few weeks.

June 15th, 2020
Seen here in his final prep ahead of a fifth bid at leaving the maidens tomorrow, 16 June 2020. Victory looks his for the taking this time around.

May 19th, 2020
While we wait for restrictions on travel to allow us to transfer him from Cape Town to KZN, he has been freshened up and seems to be doing well during the autumn, despite the slight winter coat he has developed. Here he is doing some pace work this morning.

April 17th, 2020
Seen here enjoying his workout this morning, he has come on nicely from that decent 2nd place finish last time out over 1400m and it shouldn’t be too long before he leaves the maidens.

April 9th, 2020
With 3 places from 4 starts so far, he appears to be strengthening up with each run. Despite the halt to the South African racing program, he is ticking over nicely. Seen at track this morning, doing some steady canter work.

December 12th, 2019
He had his final sprint-up this morning, ahead of his bid to leave the maidens in Race 1 at Kenilworth, on Saturday 14 December 2019. Here is, with jockey Corne Orffer aboard.

December 10th, 2019
He pulled up a little shin sore after that very promising debut run, just over a month ago. That isn’t unusual for an immature horse, but he has recovered well and his supporters will see him back at the course in no time. Seen below, enjoying a nice roll in the sand after his workout this morning.

November 9th, 2019
Positive comments from jockey, Corne Orffer, in the opener at Kenilworth today. He showed plenty of speed and should have lots of improvement to come.

November 7th, 2019
As he is based in Cape Town with the Brett Crawford stable, our WC team have coined the name Maitland Magic after the area where their regional office is based. After showing some solid work at home (pictured below), he has his debut this Saturday 9th November 2019 at Kenilworth Racecourse. Despite the fact that he will need the run and should be a little green, he is expected to give a good account of himself.  Final Field below.

August 24th, 2019
Following his eye-catching grass work 10 days ago, his positive trajectory continues and he is seen here excelling in his track work late last week. with stable jockey Corne Orffer up.

August 22nd, 2019
On the grass for the 2nd time and he clearly loved every second of it. He has really turned the corner and will more than likely have one more gallop next week, before we nominate him for his debut. See a clip of his gallop out at Durbanville – in the blue, closest to the camera.

August 19th, 2019
Muster Up had a grass gallop this morning, which according to the stable, went very well. We will a post a clip of that workout shortly, but in the meantime here he is back at stables.

August 4th, 2019
This son of Silvano has reached the point where he is just about ready for another grass-gallop. Weather permitting, we will see him on the grass in the next two weeks and that will give us a better idea of when we can expect to see him debut.

July 16th, 2019
Muster Up is strengthening up nicely and is starting to look like the horse we imagined he would become. He is still getting over a bit of a back complication, but the Brett Crawford team has done an excellent job at managing it and the outlook is very good for him. His work will be stepped up after his AHS vaccinations and we look forward to a three year old career, from this son of Silvano.

4th June, 2019
Muster Up is back from his stint on the farm. See the clip below for more about his recent progress.

13th April, 2019
He has hit a bit of a flat spot as far as his progress is concerned and thus hasn’t been keeping up with the demands of this current phase. As such, we have made the decision to send him off to the farm for a spell at Soetendaal. He will spend the next 3-6 weeks there, where he will be allowed to strengthen up and grow, before coming back in to get going again.

20th March 2019
Taken last Thursday the 14th March 2019, Muster Up seeing the grass for the first time. Brett Crawford’s comment: “he’s on the right in the blue jacket, I was pleased with how he handled himself and the professional manner in which he galloped, I will look to step up his sand work now, he has pulled up sound.”

28th February 2019
Muster Up’s pace work from Thursday 28th February 2019. He has a classy action, and will just need some time to get it all together.

4th December, 2018
He is still growing and will take some time, as Silvano’s generally do. However, he is starting to look like a smart little colt and he is taking every challenge he faces in his stride. The image of him below was taken this morning.

7th September 2018
He has done very well over the winter and he goes about his business like he has done this in a previous life time. He has a great temperament and seems to take everything in his stride. Not a big horse, but he is a strong racy colt and having almost completed the first phase of preparation for the race track he will soon be on his way to Cape Town to join up with Brett Crawford.
