On Tuesday 10th December 2019, we have three runners at the Vaal. Blessed Rain is back after a 32 week absence, with Happy Forever lining up in the same race. Zig Zag goes to post in the 2nd race, for his second start and he should make good improvement. See more here.

Monday 9th December 2019
Flamingo Park

Race 1 – 12:35
1000m – Maiden Plate

10 – Listen To Lilly
Trainer: Cliffie Miller
Jockey: Marco van Rensburg
Wgt: 57.5kg
Draw: 1(15 Runners)
Current Betting: 8/1

She needed that first outing on the dirt, when showing plenty of early speed before fading out for a modest finish. As such, we have decided to drop her back to the 1000m this time. Her work has been very good since that outing and Marco van Rensburg has opted to stick with the ride. She is drawn on the right side of the course and we are expecting to see her make good improvement this time. If finding a relatively soft lead, she could be tough to shake off in the final stages and we’ll be expecting her to finish in the first four places.

Winning Form Comment: Had excused in local debut. Drops back to the minimum trip and can improve.

Race 2 – 13:10
1000m – MR 62 Handicap

4 – Spanish Fort
Trainer: Cliffie Miller
Jockey: Marco van Rensburg
Wgt: 60.0kg
Draw: 6 (15 Runners)
Current Betting: 6/1

He has been a consistent horse to follow in his last few starts and he has a great opportunity of finding the winners enclosure this time. A speedy sort, he lines up 5kg’s better off at the weights with the winner of his last start (Gallagher). Marco van Rensburg jumps back aboard, having ridden him in his maiden victory and with the blinkers removed this time, he has another solid each way chance.

Winning Form Comment: Is 5kg’s better off at the weights with number 8 on latest. Is a threat.

Tuesday 10th December 2019
Vaal Turf

Race 1 – 13:05
1000m – Maiden Plate (3YO Fillies)

1 – Blessed Rain
Trainer: Stuart Pettigrew
Jockey: Dylan Lerena
Wgt: 60.0kg
Draw: 5 (15 Runners)
Predicted Betting: 10/1

The form line of her first start, when finishing right behind True To Life, is one of the stronger form lines of the 3-year old fillies. She coughed in both of her starts thereafter and as a result, we have decided to treat her a bleeder going forward. She has come back with a vengeance and after two solid grass gallops, she is in a very good place right now. Comments from the stable are that if the treatment for her coughing is successful, they won’t be able to catch her and she should win. With that said, after all the rain experienced on the Highveld, the course is expected to be rain affected and that will add a bit of uncertainty as to how she will take to the soft going. With the above in mind, we give her a good place chance.

Winning Form Comment: Speedy sort. Fair form before the break. Can place if fit and well.

9 – Happy Together
Trainer: Clinton Binda
Jockey: Callan Murray
Wgt: 60.0kg
Draw: 4 (15 Runners)
Predicted Betting: 33/1

She was slow out the stalls on debut and continued to race green for much of the way, before fading over the final 250m. She returns to the same course and distance this time and Callan Murray jumps aboard. She will be expected to make big improvement with the experience under her belt and we will be hoping for a top half finish.

Winning Form Comment: Had issues at the start on debut. Would’ve gained from the experience and can improve.

Race 2 – 13:40
1200m – Maiden Plate

14 – Zig Zag
Trainer: Clinton Binda
Jockey: S’manga Khumalo
Wgt: 60.0kg
Draw: 5 (18 Runners)
Predicted Betting: 12/1

He gave a fair account of himself in yielding conditions on debut, despite being a little slow into stride at the start. The experience would’ve benefitted him immensely and he will be expected to make big improvement, with Khumalo up this time. On paper, it is a wide open race with most of the opposition expected to show improvement, but the stable is excellent form and he’ll be a nice horse to follow for the top four places.

Winning Form Comment: Slow into stride on moderate debut. Would’ve come on from the run and can improve with Khumalo in the saddle.
